Why Athletes Trust Chiropractic Care

In this episode of the Kuns Chiropractic Clinic podcast, Dr. Westley Kuns dives into one of his most frequently asked questions: why do athletes consistently turn to chiropractic care?

From weekend warriors to professional competitors, athletic activity places unique demands on the body, and Dr. Kuns breaks down exactly what is happening physically and why chiropractic fits so naturally into an athlete’s routine.

Whether you are looking to improve performance, speed up recovery, or simply stay in the game longer, this episode offers a clear and compelling look at the role chiropractic care plays in athletic health, straight from the Gresham, Oregon clinic serving athletes of all levels.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Westley Kuns, and you’re listening to the Kuns Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Gresham, Oregon. Today we’re talking about something I get asked about all the time. Why do athletes, from weekend warriors to professional competitors, keep coming back to chiropractic care? And honestly, once you understand what’s happening in the body during athletic activity, the answer makes a lot of sense.

So here’s the thing. Athletes put their bodies through a tremendous amount of stress. Every sprint, every jump, every swing, every tackle, those movements create force that travels through the joints, the muscles, and the spine. Over time, even without a dramatic injury, that repeated stress can cause small misalignments in the spine and joints. We call those subluxations. And when those are present, the body just doesn’t move as efficiently as it should.

Now, here’s what’s interesting. A lot of athletes come in not because they’re in serious pain, but because something feels just a little off. Maybe their stride doesn’t feel right. Maybe they’re not rotating as freely through their hips or shoulders. Maybe recovery after a hard workout is taking longer than it used to. Those are signs the body is asking for a tune-up, and that’s exactly where chiropractic shines.

One of the biggest reasons athletes trust chiropractic is the focus on function, not just pain relief. When we work on restoring proper alignment and joint mobility, we’re helping the nervous system communicate more clearly with the muscles. And when that communication is clean, the body moves better, reacts faster, and performs closer to its true potential. That’s not a small thing. For an athlete, better movement mechanics can mean the difference between a personal best and a frustrating plateau.

Let me break this down for you with a simple example. Think about your shoulder. The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, and it relies heavily on the surrounding joints being in good alignment, including the upper back and the neck. If there’s restriction or tension in those areas, the shoulder has to compensate. And compensation leads to strain. Chiropractic adjustments help restore that full kinetic chain, so every part is doing its job and nothing is overloaded.

The other big piece is recovery. Athletes want to get back to training quickly and safely. Chiropractic care supports that by reducing inflammation in the joints, improving circulation to the surrounding tissues, and helping the body reset after hard effort. It fits naturally alongside rest, hydration, good nutrition, and the other pillars of smart athletic recovery.

So what can you do starting today? First, pay attention to asymmetries in your movement. If one hip feels tighter than the other, if one shoulder sits differently, if your back stiffens up after activity more on one side, those are clues. Second, don’t wait for pain to become your motivator. Proactive care is far more effective than reactive care. And third, think about chiropractic as part of your performance team, just like a good coach or a solid training plan.

If you’re an athlete here in the Gresham area, or honestly if you’re anyone who moves their body and wants to keep doing it well, I’d love to sit down with you, do a thorough evaluation, and see what we can do together.
