Hey everyone, and welcome back to Dr. Kuns’ Chiro Chat. I’m Dr. Kuns, and today we’re diving into something I see all the time in my officeβ€”people who are so busy taking care of others that they forget to take care of themselves.

Whether you’re a caregiver for a loved one, a traveling professional always on the go, or even just juggling the daily chaos of family life, your body is keeping score. And one of the first places that tension and wear-and-tear shows up? Your back.

So today, let’s talk about how you can stay strong, mobile, and pain-free while caring for others.

First off: you can’t pour from an empty cup.

If you’re constantly lifting, bending, or standing for long periodsβ€”maybe helping a parent move from bed to chair, or pushing a wheelchairβ€”you are basically doing physical labor. And just like an athlete or a mover, your body needs recovery time and support.

Make sure you’re stretching daily, even if it’s just for five minutes. Focus on your hamstrings, hip flexors, and shouldersβ€”those are the spots that usually get tight and lead to lower back pain.

Second: Watch your postureβ€”especially when lifting.

Here’s the deal: most people bend with their back, not their knees. It’s faster, and it feels easier… until it doesn’t. I always tell patientsβ€”if you’re helping someone stand or reach, pretend you’re doing a squat at the gym. Keep your spine neutral, core engaged, and lift with your legs. If something feels offβ€”listen to your body.

And if you’re traveling a lotβ€”whether by plane, car, or trainβ€”be mindful of how you sit. Try not to slump, and use a small pillow or even a rolled-up jacket behind your lower back to support your lumbar spine.

Third: Movement is medicine.

One of the best ways to keep your spine healthy is to simply move. A quick walk around the block. A few stretches in the morning. Even doing shoulder rolls while standing in line can help keep your joints loose and blood flowing.

I recommend building in β€œmicro-breaks”—every hour, take 60 seconds to stand, stretch, or walk a few steps. It’s a game-changer for energy and spinal health.

And finally, don’t ignore the pain.

Pain is your body’s way of waving a red flag. If you’re waking up stiff, feeling sore at the end of the day, or just can’t seem to shake that low back acheβ€”it’s time to get checked out. Chiropractic care isn’t just about fixing problemsβ€”it’s about preventing them before they sideline you.

At Kuns Chiropractic, we use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, posture correction, and muscle work to help you stay strong, mobile, and ready to care for the people you loveβ€”without breaking your own body in the process.

So here’s the bottom line:

Being a caregiverβ€”whether for family, clients, or even just your busy householdβ€”is one of the toughest jobs out there. But it shouldn’t cost you your health. Take care of your body, and it will take care of you… so you can keep showing up for the people who need you.
