Hey everyone, and welcome back to Dr. Kuns’ Chiro Chat. Iβm Dr. Kuns, and today weβre diving into something I see all the time in my officeβpeople who are so busy taking care of others that they forget to take care of themselves.
Whether you’re a caregiver for a loved one, a traveling professional always on the go, or even just juggling the daily chaos of family life, your body is keeping score. And one of the first places that tension and wear-and-tear shows up? Your back.
So today, letβs talk about how you can stay strong, mobile, and pain-free while caring for others.
First off: you canβt pour from an empty cup.
If youβre constantly lifting, bending, or standing for long periodsβmaybe helping a parent move from bed to chair, or pushing a wheelchairβyou are basically doing physical labor. And just like an athlete or a mover, your body needs recovery time and support.
Make sure youβre stretching daily, even if itβs just for five minutes. Focus on your hamstrings, hip flexors, and shouldersβthose are the spots that usually get tight and lead to lower back pain.
Second: Watch your postureβespecially when lifting.
Hereβs the deal: most people bend with their back, not their knees. Itβs faster, and it feels easier… until it doesnβt. I always tell patientsβif youβre helping someone stand or reach, pretend youβre doing a squat at the gym. Keep your spine neutral, core engaged, and lift with your legs. If something feels offβlisten to your body.
And if youβre traveling a lotβwhether by plane, car, or trainβbe mindful of how you sit. Try not to slump, and use a small pillow or even a rolled-up jacket behind your lower back to support your lumbar spine.
Third: Movement is medicine.
One of the best ways to keep your spine healthy is to simply move. A quick walk around the block. A few stretches in the morning. Even doing shoulder rolls while standing in line can help keep your joints loose and blood flowing.
I recommend building in βmicro-breaksββevery hour, take 60 seconds to stand, stretch, or walk a few steps. Itβs a game-changer for energy and spinal health.
And finally, donβt ignore the pain.
Pain is your bodyβs way of waving a red flag. If youβre waking up stiff, feeling sore at the end of the day, or just canβt seem to shake that low back acheβitβs time to get checked out. Chiropractic care isnβt just about fixing problemsβitβs about preventing them before they sideline you.
At Kuns Chiropractic, we use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, posture correction, and muscle work to help you stay strong, mobile, and ready to care for the people you loveβwithout breaking your own body in the process.
So hereβs the bottom line:
Being a caregiverβwhether for family, clients, or even just your busy householdβis one of the toughest jobs out there. But it shouldnβt cost you your health. Take care of your body, and it will take care of you… so you can keep showing up for the people who need you.
