Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Westley Kuns, and you’re listening to the Kuns Chiropractic Clinic podcast, coming to you from right here in Gresham, Oregon. Today we’re talking about something I really enjoy discussing, and that’s chiropractic care for athletes and active adults. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a dedicated runner, a CrossFit enthusiast, or just someone who loves staying active, this one is for you.

Here’s the thing. A lot of people think chiropractic care is just for when something goes wrong. You tweak your back, you throw out your neck, and then you come see me. And yes, we absolutely help with that. But what I want you to understand today is that chiropractic care is also one of the most powerful tools you have for keeping your body performing at its best, and for keeping you in the game longer.

Now, let me break this down for you. When you’re active, your body takes on a lot of repetitive stress. Think about a runner logging thirty or forty miles a week. Or a cyclist spending hours in that forward-bent position. Or even someone hitting the gym four or five days a week. All of that activity, as great as it is for your health, also creates wear and tear on your joints, your muscles, and your spine. Over time, small imbalances start to develop. Your body compensates. And before you know it, what started as a little hip tightness becomes a nagging knee problem. Or that shoulder that’s been a little stiff starts affecting your swing, your throw, your stroke.

Here’s what’s interesting. Your spine and nervous system are at the center of all of this. When the joints of your spine aren’t moving the way they should, it affects how your brain and your body communicate. It affects your coordination, your reaction time, your muscle firing patterns. So chiropractic adjustments aren’t just about pain relief. They’re about restoring proper movement and function so your whole body can do what it’s designed to do.

I also work with the joints beyond the spine. Ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, wrists. If you’re an active person, all of those joints matter. And when one of them isn’t moving well, the rest of your body has to pick up the slack. That’s usually where injuries are born.

So what can you actually do starting today? A few things. First, pay attention to your body. If something feels off, don’t just push through it. That nagging discomfort is your body’s way of asking for attention. Second, make sure you’re warming up properly before activity and giving yourself time to recover after. I know that sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many injuries I see that trace right back to skipping those steps. And third, think about chiropractic care as part of your regular routine, not just a last resort. Many of my most active patients come in for regular adjustments the way they’d schedule a massage or a tune-up. It keeps things moving well and helps catch small problems before they become big ones.

Now, when should you actually come in and see me? If you’re dealing with pain that’s been hanging around for more than a week or two, please don’t wait. If you notice that your performance has dropped off and you can’t figure out why, that’s worth a conversation. If you’ve had a recent injury, even a minor one, getting evaluated early can make a big difference in how fast you recover. And honestly, even if you’re feeling fine right now, if you’re active and you’ve never had a chiropractic evaluation, it’s worth coming in just to understand what your body looks like from a movement and alignment standpoint.

We love working with active people here at Kuns Chiropractic Clinic. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping someone get back to the sport or the activity that they love. That’s what this work is all about.
