Hey there, this is Doctor Kuns from Kuns Chiropractic Clinic here in Gresham, and I’m really glad you’re tuning in today. We’re going to talk about something that affects just about everyone I see in my office… stress. But more importantly, we’re going to talk about how movement can be one of your best tools for managing it.
Now, you know what I hear all the time? People say, I’m so stressed I can barely think straight. I carry all my tension in my shoulders. My neck is killing me. And here’s the thing… stress doesn’t just live in your mind. It shows up in your body in very real, very physical ways. Tight muscles, headaches, that knot between your shoulder blades that just won’t let go. Your body literally holds onto stress.
So let me break this down for you. When you’re stressed, your nervous system kicks into what we call fight or flight mode. Your muscles tense up, your breathing gets shallow, and your body prepares to either run or fight. That’s great if you’re being chased by a bear… but not so great when you’re sitting at a desk worrying about deadlines. The problem is, that tension builds up and never gets released. And that’s where movement comes in.
Movement is like a reset button for your nervous system. When you move your body, you’re sending signals to your brain that say, hey, we’re okay, we can relax now. Physical activity helps burn off those stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. It increases blood flow, loosens tight muscles, and honestly, it just feels good. You don’t need to run a marathon or spend two hours at the gym. Even gentle movement makes a huge difference.
Let me give you some practical things you can start doing today. First, try what I call movement breaks. Every hour, stand up, stretch your arms overhead, roll your shoulders back, turn your head side to side. Just twenty or thirty seconds. It interrupts that stress cycle and reminds your body to let go of tension. Second, go for a walk. I can’t stress this enough. A fifteen minute walk outside does wonders. Fresh air, change of scenery, gentle rhythm… it all works together to calm your nervous system. And third, focus on your breathing while you move. Deep breaths through your nose, out through your mouth. Breathing and movement together are incredibly powerful.
Now, here’s what’s interesting. A lot of people don’t realize that spinal health plays a big role in how your body handles stress. When your spine isn’t moving properly, when joints are stuck or misaligned, it creates extra tension in the muscles and nerves around them. That can actually amplify your stress response. Your body’s working harder just to function normally. That’s where chiropractic care comes in. We help restore proper movement to your spine, which takes pressure off your nervous system and helps your whole body manage stress better.
If you’re dealing with chronic tension, headaches, or that feeling like your body just can’t relax no matter what you do, it’s worth getting checked. We can evaluate your spine, find those areas that aren’t moving well, and get you feeling better. And when your body feels better, handling stress becomes so much easier.
So here’s my challenge for you this week. Pick one type of movement… a daily walk, some simple stretches, maybe even dancing in your kitchen… and commit to it for just five or ten minutes a day. Notice how you feel. Notice if your shoulders drop a little, if your breathing deepens, if that mental fog starts to lift.
