Learn why proper alignment matters for more than just pain relief and how it impacts your body’s overall function and health.
Hey there, and welcome. I’m Doctor Westley Kuns from Kuns Chiropractic Clinic here in Gresham, Oregon. Today I want to talk with you about something that affects every single person listening — your body’s alignment and why it matters so much more than you might think.
So, here’s what I see all the time. Someone comes in with neck pain or low back pain, and they think that’s the only problem. But when I look at their posture and how their body’s aligned, I can see the real story. That pain? It’s often just the alarm bell. The actual issue is how their whole body is working together — or not working together.
Think about your car for a second. If your wheels are out of alignment, what happens? Maybe you notice the steering wheel pulls to one side. But the real damage? That’s happening to your tires, wearing them down unevenly. Your body works the same way.
Now, here’s what proper alignment really means. Your head should sit balanced over your shoulders. Your shoulders over your hips. Your hips over your knees and ankles. It’s like stacking blocks — when everything lines up, there’s no strain. But when that head drifts forward — and let me tell you, I see this constantly with people looking at phones and computers — now your neck muscles are working overtime. Your upper back rounds forward. Your lower back compensates. Everything starts breaking down.
And you know what’s interesting? This isn’t just about back pain. When your spine isn’t aligned properly, it affects your nervous system. Your brain communicates with every cell in your body through nerves that run through your spine. Misalignment can interfere with that communication. People come in for back pain and then tell me after a few adjustments that they’re sleeping better, their headaches are gone, they have more energy. That’s not magic — that’s your body functioning the way it’s designed to when the interference is removed.
Let me give you something practical you can do right now. Sit up tall, pull your shoulders back gently, and imagine a string pulling the top of your head toward the ceiling. Feel that? That’s what neutral alignment should feel like. Now check in with yourself throughout the day. Are you slouching? Is your head pushed forward? Just that awareness is the first step.
Another thing — movement matters. Your body wasn’t designed to sit in one position for eight hours. If you’re working at a desk, stand up every thirty minutes. Roll your shoulders. Stretch your chest. Walk around. Keep things moving and you’ll maintain better alignment naturally.
But here’s the thing. Sometimes your body’s been out of alignment for so long that it feels normal. You might not even realize how much compensation is happening. That’s where we come in. A chiropractic evaluation looks at your whole body mechanics — how you stand, how you move, where the stress patterns are showing up.
If you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or you just know your posture isn’t great, come see us at Kuns Chiropractic Clinic. We’ll figure out what’s going on and create a plan to get your body working better. And honestly, even if you feel fine, a check-up can catch small problems before they become big ones.
Your body is incredibly resilient, but it does its best work when everything’s lined up properly. Give it that chance.
