Hey there, and welcome back to the show. I’m Doctor Westley Kuns, chiropractor and owner of Kuns Chiropractic Clinic here in Gresham, Oregon. Today we’re tackling something I think is long overdue. We’re going to talk about what chiropractors actually do, and along the way, we’re going to bust some of the most common myths I hear from patients walking through my door for the very first time.

Because here’s the thing… a lot of people have misconceptions about chiropractic care. And those misconceptions can actually stop people from getting help they really need. So let’s clear the air.

Myth number one. Once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to go forever. I hear this one constantly. And honestly, I get why people think that. But here’s the truth. Chiropractic care is not a lifelong commitment you’re locked into. When someone comes in for a specific problem, say low back pain or neck stiffness, we create a plan focused on resolving that problem. Some people feel better in a handful of visits. Others take a bit longer depending on what’s going on. Now, some patients do choose to come in regularly for what we call maintenance or wellness care. But that is always a choice. It’s never a requirement. Think of it like going to the gym. You don’t have to go forever, but a lot of people find it’s worth keeping up because they feel better when they do.

Myth number two. Chiropractors just crack your back. Okay, so this one makes me smile a little. Yes, chiropractic adjustments can produce that popping or cracking sound. But that sound is just gas being released from the fluid in your joints. It’s completely normal, and honestly, sometimes there’s no sound at all, and the adjustment is still totally effective. But more importantly, what we’re actually doing goes way beyond a pop. We’re assessing how your spine and joints are moving, identifying areas that are restricted or not functioning well, and using precise, controlled movements to restore better motion and reduce stress on the surrounding muscles and nerves. It’s a skilled clinical process, not just a random crack.

Myth number three. Chiropractic care isn’t safe. This is probably the myth that matters most to address, because it keeps people from seeking care they could really benefit from. Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest forms of care for musculoskeletal issues, things like back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Of course, like anything in healthcare, it’s not right for every single situation. That’s why we do a thorough intake and examination before we ever begin treatment. We want to make sure chiropractic is appropriate for you specifically. And if it’s not, we’ll tell you that, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

So what can you do right now? A few simple things. First, if you’ve been putting off getting evaluated because you weren’t sure what chiropractic even involves, I hope today helped clear that up. Second, pay attention to how your body feels. Stiffness, recurring headaches, back or neck discomfort that just won’t quit, those things are worth getting checked out. And third, don’t let fear or old myths be the reason you stay in pain.

If any of this resonates with you, I’d love to see you in the office. Whether it’s your first time seeing a chiropractor or you’ve just been away for a while, we make it easy to come in, ask questions, and figure out if we’re the right fit for you. No pressure, no commitment, just a conversation and an honest evaluation.

We’re located right here in Gresham, Oregon, and we’d love to be part of your health journey. You can reach out to us at Kuns Chiropractic Clinic to schedule a visit or just ask a question. We’re here for you.
